Work in progress

A working record from my bench: drawings, casting, forging, shaping Whitby Jet and the stages between an idea and a finished piece.

The work before the finished piece

Everything I make begins long before the finished object. It may start with a drawing, a fossil form, the line of a fern, a piece of raw material or a question of proportion. At the bench and forge, those first observations meet the demands of material: weight, heat, resistance, balance, light and shadow.

This page will follow pieces while they are still taking shape. I will share drawings, waxes, castings, unfinished silver, Whitby Jet as it is cut, shaped and polished, and forge work before its final surface is resolved. Some ideas will become finished work; others may change direction, return to the bench, or remain as part of the process.

These stages matter to me because they retain decisions that can disappear in the finished piece. A tool mark, an altered line or a form reconsidered records the conversation between the hand, the eye and the material. Work in progress shows that conversation while it is still open.

New work will be added here from the bench and forge.
